Some La Grange History
La Grange is known as the Best Little Town in Texas. As a Texas Main Street city and the seat of Fayette County, it doesn't take long to see why. When you enter historic downtown La Grange, you’re taking a journey into the past. A unique 19th century town nestled along the Colorado River, the natural beauty, charming architecture and rich heritage have attracted visitors worldwide.
While it is a small town that retains its rural character and a high quality of life, La Grange is the perfect distance to three world-class metropolitan areas - 60 miles to Austin, 80 miles to Houston and 110 miles to San Antonio. Downtown is an important economic driver for the community as a whole and a series of tools are in place to help preserve its unique character while supporting new business and development. The courthouse square is both a local historic district and National Register historic district, the latter offers the opportunity for use of both the state and federal historic tax incentive programs. Additionally, the Main Street program offers paint and sign grants while the EDC provides a series of local incentives to support small businesses including a revolving loan program and tax abatements.
The streets of La Grange were laid out several years before the organization of Fayette County in 1837. First populated by Austin's colonists - "The Original Three Hundred", then followed by German immigrants in the 1840's and Czech and Moravians in the 1850's, the cultures of these pioneers are evident today and have been proudly passed through generations

Monument Hill & Kreische Brewery State Historic Site
The must-see stop is the Monument Hill & Kreische Brewery State Historic Site. This park holds two incredible historic sites and a ton of beautiful nature. One site is Monument Hill honoring the Texan heroes who lost their lives in the Dawson Massacre and Mier Expedition, where Texans had to draw beans for their lives. The other stop is the stone ruins of the Kreische Brewery, one of the oldest breweries in Texas started in the 1860s, and the house of the Kreische family, which you can tour.
The monument marks the tomb of the men that died during the Dawson Massacre of September 1842 and the ill-fated Mier expedition of November 1842, also known as the “black bean” incident. Nearby citizens reinterred their remains here in a common tomb so that they can be honored for their sacrifice. The site is now marked by a 1936 Centennial monument.
In 1849, German immigrant Heinrich Ludwig Kreische purchased 172 acres of land including the Dawson/Mier tomb, now known as Monument Hill. Master stonemason Kreische built a three-story house for his family. In the 1860s, he utilized the spring water from the ravine below his house and started one of the first commercial breweries in Texas. Walk the ruins of this once bustling brewery and envision how Fayette County citizens would come and enjoy a pint of Kreische’s Bluff Beer while looking out towards the beautiful Texas landscape. The Kreische Brewery and home are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
